"La Barberie" was a typical Norman farm : Andre and his wife Germaine milked 30 cows, made cider and calvados, tended the vegetable garden and baked bread in the wood fired oven.What was not typical was that Germaine started a B&B, the first in Normandy region.

Serge, the first son certified the farm as organic; again, the first in the region. At that time organic was considered difficult and not worthy but Serge was determined. His business is 100% autonomous from wheat production to bread including energy and now sells thousands of bread in 5 markets nearby.

 Philippe, the second son, hated to be a farmer when he was a child and became a cook. He returned to the family farm after 20 years of travelling around the world. Eventually he built an "auberge", which means a casual restaurant in a farm where you can enjoy home-grown organic food. Recently more and more of our farm's activities revolve around passing on their knowledge in the form of training, on-site placements and various workshops.

Philippe used to be mainly in charge of his Auberge but now he takes consulting jobs on top of it, as an expert of organic food. He provides professional cooks trainings on how to cook organic, advises cooking TV show host about organic ingredients, participates in a project to introduce organic food to school/kindergarten lunch.

 Ecological and organic awareness is firmly rooted in our farm since 30 years. It made perfect sense to work in harmony with nature, even though very few people supported this approach at the beginning. We do more than we talk. Today this accumulated experience can be passed on to people who want to learn by doing. 

 A good example is Thibault. He used to be an office worker who came to visit the farm as a wwoofer. He decided to become a farmer, so he started growing vegetables on a piece of land owned by Philippe. His business is very successful so he’s now trying a new activity : building eco tiny-houses in a green-house and sell them.
